Did you ever suspect that you stood out in a crowd but didn't know why?

Constantly; it's the story of my life.

I think I was free of that for about 5 years in my 20s, when I started dressing better for work. But ever since then, even when I'm trying to be inconspicuous, I seem to stand out and I get stares.

Right as I write this, I get up to get some more sugar here at the Starbucks. The two hepcats with the Fred Durst beards, garish tattoo sleeves and eyebrow piercings a-plenty didn't get a second look but me? Watch out, freak walking. :P

What makes you feel like, that's the case?

I was hanging out in various waiting areas at Methodist Hospital for testing today and felt like I stood out. I still dress awfully like a college student and I was hauling around my LL Bean backpack just in case I needed anything in it (I'm used to doctor's appointments requiring my pills, various cards in my purse, a calendar, maybe my checkbook, etc.--might as well have it all just in case) and apparently normal people don't carry a lot of "just in case" stuff with them to medical tests.

Hey, that's funny. I have a lot of LL Bean stuff m'self - I wear their polo's - and I carry a LL Bean notebook bag as a briefcase. :P

Yeah, I dig that. If you don't conform to current style - and I don't - you stand out terribly; and 'being prepared' is certainly not in style, so far as I can see.

I dress in polos and dockers, and that was in style - at one time, I think. Now people think I'm waiting for my tee time. :P

Which I guess explains why the slackers didn't get stares; looking like you just escaped from a meth lab is the style, of the time. :P

I'm from the home of L.L. Bean (not Kennebunkport itself, but Maine) and have had their backpacks since I started school. Their no-questions return policy is excellent--they even exchanged my brother's backpack after the dog ate the strap off it. I've now branched out into their khakis and jeans.

I dress up as little as required for work--I have to be comfortable. Also I can't afford fancy clothes. :P

I was also quite a bit younger than most of the folks getting tested today, which always makes me look a little out of place.
